The Circus Apartment
A calming, textured interior in a muted palette
This project saw the redecoration and furnishing of a Grade 1 listed two bed apartment in Bath’s jewel, The Circus. Having never owned within a listed building before, my clients were daunted by the process and instructed me to celebrate the flat’s impressive Georgian features, creating a comfortable and luxurious space with an eclectic, curated edge. While they wanted this edge, they also can find a lot of colour jarring, so the project focused on careful selection of a blend of modern and antique furnishings, lighting and materials to achieve texture, layering and interest in a harmonious way. The overall feel is classy, calm and structured.
Since much of the furniture and finishings were in neutral tones, we wanted to bring colour in using the rugs. Non matching rugs in complimentary orange tones bring the whole scheme to life and layer in patterns. Lighting was also a really important factor for the client. Two matching modern chandeliers struck the perfect balance of luxury and modernity in the adjoining sitting and dining rooms.
In the bedrooms we wanted to create a familial resemblance between them while each having its own calming palette. Antique bedside tables and furnishings bring a beautiful warmth to the rooms, while layered accessories in blues and pinks give each room its own feel.
Gemma has been professionally trained which I specifically wanted, as I had already interior design experience but needed some extra expert guidance. There were several space planning issues and her spatial planning was brilliant, so I had the confidence to buy furniture items that I knew would fit.Gemma sourced some AMAZING PIECES that I would never have found on my own. One of these was a rug that brought my whole scheme together brilliantly. I think that is a special talent to find something that integrates with all of someone’s personal items . The living space just looked fantastic after she added the rug!
Gemma was super friendly and approachable and it was a real joy to work with her. She maintains a professional manner though in her work, maintains deadlines and you can tell she really cares about getting an excellent result.I’m looking forward to working with Gemma on future home projects and would highly recommend her to anyone!”
This project was a pleasure, as it’s always a privilege to be allowed to work in buildings at the heart of the South West’s strong architectural heritage and to help my residential interior design clients achieve their dreams.
